PEDIGREE dogs were seized from a Lancaster barn by police and the RSPCA after concerns were raised about the animals’ welfare.

The raid happened at lunchtime on Monday at the barn off Ashton Road.

RSPCA spokeswoman Leanne Plumtree said: “Thirty-seven dogs of various different breeds, including lurchers, pugs and cocker spaniels, were seized by police on veterinary advice, and placed in RSPCA care.”

Mrs Plumtree said the investigation was ongoing, adding that the organisation was looking at the possibility of a prosecution.

She said there were fears for the dogs’ welfare and complaints had been received about the site.

A Lancaster City Council spokesman said licensing officers had visited the premises on June 15.
