Detectives are treating a house fire near Carnforth, in which a man was taken to hospital, as arson.
Firefighters from Milnthorpe, Arnside and Kirkby Lonsdale were called to a property in Pear Tree Park at Holme at 2.23am on Monday.
Police said a 49-year-old man was inside his home when, at around 2am, the fire started.
But he was alerted to the fire when a smoke alarm was activated and managed to escape the property uninjured.
Three appliances were sent to tackle the blaze, which started in the hallway of the two-storey terraced home.
Crews donned breathing apparatus before using two hose reel jets to fight the flames.
In a statement, Cumbria Police said: “Police would like to reassure the public that such events are very rare and to take the opportunity to remind people to check their smoke alarms on a regular basis.
“Police are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen any suspicious movements, persons or vehicles between 2am to 3am in the area at the time to contact Kendal CID on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
A spokeswoman for North West Ambulance Service said the man was taken to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary to be checked over.
