Full-time workers will be encouraged to become councillors after Lancaster City Council voted to switch meetings of the full council and cabinet from daytime to evening.
After next May’s elections, council meetings will move from 2pm to 6pm and cabinet meetings from 10am to 6pm.
The meetings are held at both Lancaster Town Hall and Morecambe Town Hall.
After Labour’s council business chairman, Coun Janet Hall, put the recommendations to the full council on Wednesday December 17, councillors voted 30-20 in favour of moving council meetings to 6pm and 23-20 in favour of moving cabinet meetings to 6pm.
Extra staff time and building running costs are estimated to amount to £2,500 a year, the council said.
All committees already meet in the evening except planning and highways and licensing.
