LANCASTER’S new £5m Travelodge has opened at the former Regal cinema and bingo hall site in King Street – and the Tesco Express store below it will serve its first customers in two weeks.

But a plan for a champagne bar as part of the development have fallen through after the company behind it, Centro Coffee and Juice Ltd, went into liquidation.

The Mayor of Lancaster, Coun Tony Wade, officially opened the 115-room Travelodge, the city centre’s first branded budget hotel, last Thursday.

It has created 20 jobs, with staff recruited through Job Centre Plus, which helps the long-term unemployed back into work.

Rooms are available from £19 a night, but Travelodge has yet to supply occupancy figures for its first week in business.

Another 60-room Travelodge will open at the Arndale Shopping Centre in Morecambe this summer.
