After his operation Martin was referred to Heartbeat for his rehabilitation classes.

He now wants to raise funds for the charity by doing the Morecambe 10k on June 3 to mark his 12-month anniversary of having his surgery.

The 49-year-old said: “Even though I have had family members with the condition, being diagnosed with heart disease was a huge shock. But after my surgery I found the Heartbeat rehab program an invaluable part of my recovery, the team worked with me and gave me advice on training limits to help me achieve my goals, without the program I don’t think I’d be as well as I feel now.”

Martin previously enjoyed taking part in challenges such as Bad Ass Mucker 10k in 2015 and in 2014 and 2013 he took part in Para10 which is a 10-mile endurance run organised by the Parachute Regiment and was physically fit when he began to feel unwell.

Lisa Riding Heartbeat fundraiser said: “Martin has found his recovery difficult not only physically, but emotionally to, so this really will be a challenge for him and we can’t thank him enough. He is a true inspiration to us all.”

Martin is now a member of the Cardiac Athletes and took part in his 1st 5k run in Oct 2017, just four months after his operation.
