Ceramic pottery exhibition at Gavagan Art

A former head boy at Lancaster Royal Grammar School, Edward was highly regarded in Japan and represented in national collections here in England.

An exhibition of his work together with Carnforth based potter James Hake will be shown at Gavagan Art in Settle North Yorkshire until December 22.

The work of each being very much influenced by the Oriental ceramic tradition.

James Hake is based near Carnforth and Edward Hughes had for a number of years a studio at Isel Hall near Cockermouth.

Mary Gavagan, owner of Gavagan Art, and curator of the exhibition said: “ I am extremely pleased to be presenting this ceramic show. I have regularly shown Ceramics by James Hake since opening my gallery in Settle in 2010.

“Last year when delivering new work James said how he admired Edward Hughes’s work.

“I explained how Edward had given a lecture for me in Lancaster in 1998 when I was director of the university gallery.

“The lecture was in connection with an exhibition called “JAPAN - A Northern Focus” of work from the University’s own collection and Japanese prints from Blackburn Art Gallery. This was in 1998.

“Edward’s ceramics were an integral part of the exhibition.”

James makes a range of ceramic stoneware, thrown at the potter’s wheel.

He also produces slab rolled work including wall hangings and square dishes.

Exhibitions of Edward Hughes work were held in Lancaster, Cumbria, Manchester and London though ninety percent of the work went to Japan.

The exhibition is open from 11am-3pm.
