Centenarian celebrates milestone birthday

Muriel Barron who has lived in sheltered accommodation in the city since 1999, was born in Aberdeen in 1915, the oldest daughter of Jemina and John Kennedy.

Her father was a marine engineer in the merchant navy.

She had two sisters and two brothers who are all now deceased.

In 1927 the family moved to Shangi, then at the age of 12 she returned to England with one brother and one sister where they were looked after by their great aunt in Aberdeen until the family was reunited in 1935.

In 1941 during World War Two, Muriel married James Barron a school teacher.

After her husband’s death in 1986 Muriel lived in Stonehaven until 1999 then she moved in to a sheltered flat in Lancaster where she still lives today.

Muriel is a member of Lancaster Baptist church and continues to attend its ladies fellowship meeting. Muriel has two sons, David who lives in Lancaster and Richard who was a teacher.
