Carnforth’s good start to the season continued on Saturday with a 50-5 win over Preston Grasshoppers 4ths at Kellet Road.
Preston should have taken the lead but a couple of wrong options, as well as a strong defence, kept them out.
Dan Blenkharn opened the scoring for the hosts, collecting the ball from Mathew Short, who had made the initial break for Carnforth, and it was Short who added the extras to make it 7-0.
Minutes later, following a break from Jason Short, fellow centre Sam Griffiths was able to burst through for a try, again Mathew Short converting.
On the stroke of the half time hooter, a superb angle by Jason Short saw the centre open up the defence for his first try of the day, Mathew Short adding the extras to give his team a 21-0 lead at half time.
Two minutes into the second half, Blenkharn made a superb break through the middle of the pitch before sending the ball out to Jason Short, who ran through the gap to score his second try of the game, the conversion coming back off the post.
Carnforth’s backs were now finding the gaps, with winger Jack Dorsett, second row Sam Tomlinson and both props Joe Harrison and skipper Shane Weed all making good ground.
Jack Dorsett almost broke but Jason Short was on hand to pick up and drive over for his hat-trick try and a well earned rest.
Griffiths was strong in the centres and he and Short linked superbly, Griffiths making another fine break to register his second try of the game with Mathew Short making the score 38-0.
The Preston Grasshoppers refused to give in and their reward came with 10 minutes to go when their centre took the ball out wide to score.
Dorsett’s moment came when he received the ball on half way before setting off down the wing to outpace the defence and score his first club try.
With the last play signalled by referee Geoff Mills, it was Nick Hamer who was able to squeeze through a gap in the defence to cut through and score under the posts, Mathew Short slotted the two extra points to bring up the half century and another vital four points.
