Canal dreams move a step closer to reality

A project manager has been appointed to help realise ambitions to regenerate the northern reaches of the Lancaster Canal as a major leisure attraction.

The recruitment of Helen Moriarty marks a new era for the Lancaster Canal Regeneration Partnership (LCRP) and its plans for a multi-use towpath trail along the towpath on the section of the canal between Kendal and Lancaster.

Helen will also be charged with promoting the long-term aims of full canal restoration to Kendal Canal Head and to support the delivery of other projects within the LCRP action plan.

Helen is an experienced project manager and has worked with a range of third sector organisations and led on several heritage and environmental projects, including projects such as Ulverston Canal Regeneration, Love Your Lakes and Nurture Eden.

She said: “I’m delighted to start this exciting new role supporting the partnership to create a multi-use leisure towpath along the northern reaches of the Lancaster Canal, resulting in a brilliant outdoor resource for all to enjoy.

“It’s also a great opportunity to re-explore regeneration ideas for Canal Head, creating a brilliant starting point for a fantastic and scenic canal trail”.

A spokesperson for the Lancaster Canal Regeneration Partnership said: “We are delighted that the partnership has progressed into a new era with the appointment of Helen as project manager. We are confident that the regeneration of the northern reaches of the Lancaster Canal will benefit the wider community”.

Helen brings a range of skills and experience to the role, such as partnership working, fundraising, project management and delivery, all of which are key in pushing forward the LCRP multi-use trail project, canal path improvements and promotion of the leisure route.
