More than a fifth of people who own small and medium business in the north west have seen staff absence levels rise in the last year.

Research by Close Brothers Asset Finance found over a third feel their company has a problem with employees abusing sick leave.

CEO Mike Randall said: “Absenteeism is a growing problem for many local firms and, if not managed properly, it could have a serious impact on productivity levels. Between cold, dark mornings, it’s easy to understand the appeal of an unauthorised duvet day.

“It’s a good idea to reconsider your absence policy. One option might be to allow employees flexibility to book leave at short notice.”
