LANCASTER Market is to close down in a move that looks set to cost taxpayers at least six times more than the Blobbyland theme park fiasco.

Councillors decided to close the market and surrender Lancaster City Council’s lease with the owners of the indoor market by the end of next year, costing taxpayers between £13m and £20m, including compensation to market traders.

The council admitted it would have to borrow money to fund the payments.
