SERVICES at Lancaster Railway Station could be reduced to speed up journey times on the West Coast Main Line.

Hourly services between London Euston and Glasgow currently stop at Lancaster.

But Network Rail’s Route Utilisation Strategy (RUS) suggests they could instead make alternate hourly stops at Lancaster and Carlisle to reduce the total journey time by 17 minutes.

Another option could be to remove stops at Warrington Bank Quay and Wigan North Western altogether.

Mike Machin, of the Lancaster and Morecambe Rail Users Group, said: “We are continuing vigorously to maintain the hourly service to London.

“We fought for a long time to get it and it is important because it is so well used.”
