A POSTMAN who stashed more than 850 items of mail at his home instead of delivering them this week said “sorry” to city householders who did not receive their post.
Gary Hainsworth, 24, picked up the mail from the Royal Mail depot, but then took it back to his house on Ashfield Avenue, Marsh.
Hainsworth, who quit his job with Royal Mail after he was found out, admitted two charges of intentionally delaying postal packets in the course of their transmission by post.
One charge, covering the period from August 28, 2010 until June 9, involved 769 packets. The other, between December 14, 2010 and May 23, involved 73 packets.
When he appeared at Lancaster Magistrates Court, Hainsworth also admitted stealing four packets of unknown value between August 28 last year and June 9.
He was given an 18-month community order including supervision and ordered to pay the Royal Mail £100 in costs and £60.83 in compensation.
