Heysham M6 Link builders Costain held a drop in event this week to consult White Lund Industrial Estate businesses on a planned closure of the A683.

The closure will result in diversions being put in place for traffic going into and out of Northgate and the wider industrial estate.

Paul Snape, project supervisor for Lancashire County Council said: “We were due to resurface the existing Northgate, but the condition of the road is such that it needs full depth re-construction.

“So Lancashire County Council took the decision to reconstruct the road between Newgate and Eastgate.

“This will not extend the timeframe for the completion of the Link Road.”

Costain said it had come across a number of uncharted services at the Northgate junction which needed to be diverted before work could be completed.

Engineers have also found buried structures which have taken many days to break out, and uncharted manholes and sewers that have had to be diverted.

As a result, an additional 700 feet of earth will have to be removed to completely re-structure the road.

The work will also see improvements made to the access for Honda, ATS, DCL and Beeline.

Shiona MacDonald, Senior Agent, Roadworks for the Heysham to M6 Link Project, said: “The drop in event was well attended by a variety of businesses from across the estate.

“Businesses were very understanding of the works that needed to be done and have given us some useful local insights to investigate in an attempt to reduce the disruption and improve traffic flows during our works.

“ Our team will now review the plans and assess the feasibility of some of the proposed changes to our layouts and traffic routes.

“When we have done so full plans will be made available for businesses to inform their customers and suppliers.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank those that attended for their valuable input.”

Works are due to be completed by the end of 2015 in four phases.

Phase one, which is due to be completed by the end of August, will see work carried out on the verges, footpaths, and carriagways on Northgate nearest the Honda Showroom, from ATS up to Bookers.

Phase 2, to be completed by November, will see work switching to the opposite verge, footpath, and carriageway of Northgate from Newgate to Eastgate.

Phase 3, also due to be completed by November will include the reconstruction of the first half of the New Gate junctions.

Finally, Phase 4, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year will involve the reconstruction of the second half of the New Gate and East Gate junctions.
