ONE of Lancaster’s longest standing family businesses is to close its doors after almost 150 years.
Leading independent women’s clothing shop Chirnsides will close in March when managing director Chris Chirnside retires.
The George Street firm was set up in 1869 by Mr Chirnside’s great grandfather, Thomas Chirnside. and has since been passed down through a further three generations.
Mr Chirnside, 64, started working in the shop at the age of 17.
“I have been in the business all my working life,” he said.
“To be fair I didn’t necessarily think it would see me to my retirement but we have got a very loyal customer base as well as staff.”
