A Lancaster-based brand consultancy firm has been named Business of the Year at the Lancashire Business View Young ‘Uns Awards 2015.

Tom Grattan, based in City Lab in Dalton Square, scooped the award at an event held at Blackpool Winter Gardens last Friday, celebrating young entrepreneurs across the county.

The firm’s director Tom, 23, beat three other established businesses to the title.

The judges for the event included representatives from Uclan, Boost Business Lancashire, Barton Grange Hotel and the Federation of Small Businesses.

The judges said: “Tom is a real ambassador for Lancashire with great vision and entrepreneurial spirit. With a varying portfolio, he has a great understanding of the needs of different sectors providing quality work. He also has a great understanding of his business’ need for cash flow and growth potential.”

Aged 18, Tom gained the job of website administrator and later marketing manager with Ripley St Thomas CE Academy under their scholar scheme. Two years later he set up SATO – a partnership marketing agency with friend, Sam Fox.

He said: “We launched this from the garden shed at my parents’ home on Peel Avenue in Lancaster in 2012 going from £300 capital to £100,000 turnover in 12 months.

“I gained international praise from Kevin Roberts of Saatchi & Saatchi alongside meeting the teams in New York and London on a couple of occasions.”

He set up Tom Grattan in 2013, and now employs a small team providing brand strategy, identity and offline and digital marketing communications in numerous sectors.

Current projects for the company include working on the strategy and “yes” campaign for Morecambe BID, seasonal campaigns for the Arndale Centre, overseeing the new identity for Barrie Wells Trust and continuing marketing of Ripley St Thomas CE Academy ahead of the school’s open evening.

Tom said: “Being a finalist was a real honour but I’m over the moon to have won the title of Business of the Year.

“The awards ceremony proved to be a fantastic evening for us all and I’d like to thank Lancashire Business View for organising such a great event. I hope this is testament that age should prove no barrier in business.”

Tom will be attending a winners’ reception at Barton Grange Hotel on Thursday July 2. The full list of winners can be found at http://www.lbvyoung-uns.co.uk/finalists
