Burger King to join McDonald's in Morecambe

Burger King will join the fast food invasion of Morecambe town centre when they open a new restaurant at the Arndale Centre.

Days after it was revealed that McDonald’s is planning to open a drive-through near the Festival Market, their closest rival has announced plans to open a new outlet in the town as well.

Burger King is advertising for a restaurant manager for the new takeaway offering a salary of up to £25,000.

It is believed they will occupy one of the empty units outside the Morecambe shopping centre.

BK used to have a restaurant on Central Drive in Morecambe but it closed several years ago and the unit is now occupied by the Frankie and Benny’s eaterie.

The Arndale, built in 1972, is in the midst of a major refurbishment.

Owner NewRiver Retail is working with Morecambe-born designer Wayne Hemingway and his firm Hemingway Design on a “reimagining” of the rundown shopping centre.

This includes new public toilets and artistic decor both inside and out.

NewRiver is also in talks with other retail and food/drink businesses who are interested in taking over empty Arndale units.

Last week, Lancaster City Council cabinet agreed to sell council-owned land to McDonald’s for a drive-through.

The land is part of a car park near the Morrison’s roundabout and the Festival Market.
