Brewing up for Lancaster St John’s Hospice

Morecambe student Annie Wood organised a night of music at Lancaster Brewery to help raise vital funds for the hospice which looked after her gran in her final moments.

The night raised £1232 for the Slyne Road hospice, where her gran Rita Townley, from Morecambe, passed away four years ago at the age of 61.

The event, LA Rocks, was part of Annie’s 21 Things for St John’s Hospice in memory of her beloved gran.

Rita had been diagnosed with lung cancer just seven-and-a-half weeks before she passed away.

Annie, who was only 17 when her gran died, said: “It was just a massive shock, and at the time I was absolutely distraught.

“But LA Rocks was a huge success. To have raised so much money from this single event puts an enormous smile on my face.”

Last year Annie drew up a list of 21 fundraising ideas - to mark reaching her 21st birthday in December.

Annie hopes to raise £10,000 during the year of fundraising.

Teacher training student Annie said: “It’s an amazing place and they helped me so much. I don’t know what I would have done without them. “Since my gran passed away I knew I wanted to do something for the hospice.”

LA Rocks, which was sponsored by Lancaster Brewery, welcomed local acts Hannah Malin, Lyndsey Brown, PNUK and The Lancaster Bombers to the stage.

Annie said: “All the acts were excellent, everybody was up dancing, the atmosphere was brilliant.

“The success brings me great confidence for everything else I have planned for St John’s Hospice; if money is being raised and people are happy and enjoying themselves then I am achieving my goal.”
