Bid for Lancaster Canal Quarter committee
A call is being made to have all political parties represented on a proposed committee for a major Lancaster development.
The Lancaster Conservative Group is calling for a sub-committee of Lancaster City Council to be formed to set the future of the Canal Corridor project.
“We will be supporting amendments to Labour’s recommended position on their Canal Corridor u-turn,” said Peter Williamson, Lancaster Conservative group leader.
“The idea the Labour cabinet can come up with a sensible plan on their own is fantasy, and we are calling on true cross-party collaboration that puts politics aside and Lancaster first.”
This comes after the city council announced a change of plans for the development – rebranding it the Canal Quarter.
Council and Labour group leader, Coun Eileen Blamire, said: “We want the best for Lancaster and a scheme that residents, businesses and visitors can take pride in.
“A cross-party council Canal Quarter Cabinet Liaison Group will be able to input into the scheme and there will be consultation with the community.
“We would urge the Conservatives to take a constructive part in those discussions and practice what they are preaching about putting politics aside instead of trying to use this issue as a political football.”
