THE roof and an attic bedroom of a house in Heysham were destroyed in a suspected arson attack.

The house on Hampton Road had been unoccupied for a week according to firefighters called to tackle the blaze at 1.30am this morning.

Crews from Morecambe, Lancaster and Bolton-le-Sands were called to the scene. Firefighters broke in through the front door and checked nobody was there before fighting the flames with the help of an aerial ladder platform.

Watch manager Steve Brown, of Morecambe Fire Station, said the fire had started in a bed in the attic room and that it was therefore thought that someone had broken into the property.

A neighbour across the road spotted the fire and alerted people in the houses on either side of the property – a man on one side, whose roof also suffered damaged, and a mother with a little boy on the other side.

Police are investigating the incident.
