Lancashire County Council is in the process of completing its design work, safety audits and costings of the elements of the off-site highway works for the Lancaster Moor area of the city.

A safety scheme near Lancaster Royal Grammar School at the Moor Gate, Wyresdale, Quernmore and East Roads junction, a pedestrian crossing over Derwent Road at its junction with Quernmore Road, and a cyclepath along Quernmore Road between the Lancaster Moor and Nightingale Hall Farm are part of the plans.

The city council said a traffic light controlled junction is not being pursued at the crossroads by the boys’ grammar school. A spokesman said any unspent money would be used to supplement the funding secured on the Moor Park and Lancaster Leisure Park developments to subsidise the local bus service.

Ward Coun Tim Hamilton-Cox said: “I regret that it’s taken so long to get round to spending cash that’s been available for over four years whilst traffic volumes from the new housing have increased.”

The city council said ward councillors, residents and schools would be consulted shortly and that the safety works and pedestrian crossing would be installed in the summer holidays outside of busy term time periods and the cycleway works in the autumn.
