The Friends of Chernobyl’s Children is a registered charity working throughout the UK.

It provides recuperative holidays for children from needy families from the contaminated areas of Belarus affected by the radiation fallout of the Chernobyl disaster in 1986.

The Lancaster group was formed in 2010 to bring a group of seven to 11-year-old socially disadvantaged children from Belarus to Lancaster for a month.

Most of the children live in villages in primitive houses with no running water or sanitation.

The children visit Lancaster from early June to early July each year.

Mandy Whitehouse and her family welcomed Vika this year. Mandy said: “I would say that the experience of hosting a Belarusian child is one of the most rewarding things we have ever done as a family.”
