Bamber Bridge, Chorley, Tarleton and Lancaster are among those looking to take on retained crews to provide extra cover.

Richard Edney from Lancashire Fire and Rescue insists the recruitment drive is standard proceedure and isn’t due to budget cuts. But he did stress the importance of retained crews.

He said: “There are some places where we struggle to find volunteers, and because the minimum you can have on an engine is four, a wholetime member from another station has to sit in, taking them away from their normal duties.”

Retained firefighters provide on-call cover from home or their place of work. They respond to emergencies when a pager alerts them, so must live or work within five minutes travel time from the station.

Firefighters must be 18 or over when they join, have permission from their current employer and maintain a reasonable standard of fitness.

Retained firefighters are paid a salary dependant on the number of hours provided.

An information session takes place on Monday, April 25 from 7-9pm at Bamber Bridge’s station in Cuerden Way. Application forms are also available at www.lancsfirerescue.org.uk
