Born in Lancaster and now based in the iconic Winter Gardens building, 31-year-old Matthew – who heads up The Design Attic – was thrilled to discover he’d been shortlisted for not one, but two industry gongs at The Be Inspired Business Awards (BIBAs).

The BIBAs is Lancashire’s largest and longest-running business awards programme, run by the North and Western Lancashire Chamber of Commerce. Taking place at the Blackpool Tower Ballroom, the awards night on September 16 will recognise a whole host of business successes.

The Design Attic is a small company consisting Matthew, Rebecca Slack and Clare Brown (Matthew’s wife).

Matthew, 30, had an enviable choice of new locations for his growing design business.

But wanting to stay in his home own to create employment, and service the needs of local businesses, he has taken up residence in the iconic Winter Gardens building on the promenade.

The Design Attic recently had the prestigious task of rebranding the Morecambe Hotel, which last year underwent a £1m investment.

And now the trio is gearing up for the exciting possibility of taking home a double whammy of awards in recognition of their hard work.

They are up for the Creative Agency award and the New Business of the Year award, with plenty more ‘ones-to-watch’ going head to head with them.

Matthew said: “What an honour to be shortlisted for two awards. It’s great to be recognised for the work we’ve produced for our clients over the last 12 months, and testimony to how far we have come in such a short space of time.”

A true multi-disciplinary studio, The Design Attic helps businesses in the North West communicate with their customers via great design and branding.

“We’re up against some really talented people and established companies so fingers crossed.”

The Design Attic was established in 2011 by Matthew, a graphic designer with more than 10 years’ experience.

Matthew was schooled at Morecambe High, went to Lancaster and Morecambe College and started work as a junior designer in a Kendal-based design company.

After eight years he decided he wanted to do something more creative. He felt ready to accept the challenge of starting his own business.

So he started working freelance. He opened the studio full time in 2013.

The Design Attic’s next plan is to launch a “Brand Clinic”, where local businesses can drop into the office to meet Matthew, understand his services and talk through any brand issues they may be having.
