A town of animal lovers?

Owners in the North West spend an average of £38 a month on their pampered pets, according to a new survey.

People in Manchester and Liverpool splash out an average total of £37.18 and £37.90 respectively on spoiling their beloved dogs and cats, according to Animal Friends pet insurance.

A shocking £7 each month goes on toys for their furry friends with another £6 to £8 going towards pampering and grooming.

The majority of their hard earned cash goes toward food at up to £24.50 with the average household owning three pets.

However, it’s animal lovers in Coventry who splash out the most on their animals, spending an average of £52.77 per month.

And animal lovers in Aberystwyth spend the most on pampering their pets as they splash out on average £20 per month on treats.

The spending habits of Britain’s pet lovers were revealed in a poll of 1,000 people by OnePoll.

The survey shockingly revealed how a 26-year-old woman from London and a 51-year-old man from Birmingham were joint first for spending the most on their pets - at £213 a month.

Those in Wrexham in North Wales spend the least amount on pampering pets by splashing out just 71p per month.

Gloucester and Worcester came joint last for spending the least amount on toys for their pets at £1.42.

The city of Worcester was also the place where households give a home to the least amount of pets.

Southampton were on the other end of the scale with the average household owning four pets.

A 28-year-old woman from London had the largest haul of animals out of those questioned with a whopping 33 pets including birds, horses and lizards.

But cats were the most popular pet choice overall and East Anglia can be dubbed the cat capital of Britain as 6.78 per cent of the region own FIVE or more cats.

The least popular pet was the lizard which was followed closely behind by horses and then hamsters.

But another interesting result revealed how twice as many men own hamsters compared to women.

Surprisingly more than half of those surveyed said they don’t have pet insurance with the Welsh being the most likely not to insure their animals.

Also 11.5 per cent of those asked said they would throw a birthday party for their pet and just over half of respondents said they would allow their pet to sleep in their bed.
