Actor Steve Halliwell’s ‘If The Cap Fits: My Rocky Road to Emmerdale’ is an honest tale of rejection and redemption throughout a fascinating and colourful life.

The candid autobiography of a genuine soap legend – who in October celebrated 20 years since his first appearance in Emmerdale – is a real-life rags to riches story.

Steve’s part in the hit TV show has led him to become one of the UK’s most recognisable and treasured soap stars.

Yet before he found success in the Yorkshire Dales, he spent many years desperately seeking work.

At one point he even spent time on the streets in search of food, sleeping in bushes and virtually living the life of a tramp.

If The Cap Fits is a warts-and-all account of his rise to fame where success was only won after great personal struggles.

Published in September, it is sure to prove inspirational to those who wish to establish a life and career for themselves in the face of similar hardships.

Going beyond the experiences of one man, Steve’s own story is evocative of a wider social, cultural and class history that permeated the country in the 60s and 70s.

Kids with nits and ‘Nitty Nora the Bug Explorer’, bitten fingernails, speech impediments, fathers with missing fingers or arms lost in industrial accidents, stunted women with bow legs caused by rickets and fleas in beds all serve to build a vivid picture of a time long gone.

The Emmerdale patriarch openly divulges his memories of some of the best and also the worst times of his colourful life.

Steve has also appeared in Coronation Street, and All Creatures Great and Small, as well as several theatre productions.

He had a top 10 hit single with Hillbilly Rock promoted by Simon Cowell when he formed a soap star band, The Woolpackers.

Catch him signing copies of his autobiography at Carnforth Bookshop on Saturday June 6, from 1.30 pm.
