This route is promoted as the Crumbly Lancashire Cheese Trail as it passes close to the largest cheese producer in Lancashire – Dew Lay on the edge of Garstang. It is a delightful walk full of interest.
From Church Street in Churchtown follow the lane pass the market pillar and into the car park of St Helen’s Church. Bear right to pick up a footpath in the far corner leading to a metal gate.
Through this bear right to arrive at a suspension footbridge across the River Wyre. After crossing the river turn left onto a path that leads across fields on a grassy track to Catterall. 2.
Turn right onto Old Lancaster Road and then after 100yds left passing between buildings to arrive on the busy A6. Cross to Tan Yard Road and after passing the large works site of Collinsons turn left onto a riverside footpath that edges along railings before continuing to the left of a housing estate to reach playing fields. Keep ahead to reach Garstang Rod. Turn left to cross Calder Bridge and then turn right over a stile.
With the field boundary on the left keep ahead for 500yds to reach a farm lane. Turn right to follow it to the complex close to Sturzaker House. As you reach the complex turn left on a private road. After 100yds on meeting the canal bridge turn onto the canal accessed through a gate on the right. On reaching the towpath turn left under the bridge.
For the next 45 minutes put away these directions and relax to enjoy this delightful reach of the Lancaster Canal as it contours through the pleasant countryside close to Garstang. As you near the town there is a fine view of the ruins of Greenhalgh Castle on the right. 50yds after the Wyre Aqueduct turn onto a footpath through a wooden gate.
Now on the Wyre Way follow the well way marked path as it takes you across fields to the A6.
As you near the A6 the path swings away from the riverside to climb an embankment to reach the road. Turn left and then at a footpath sign turn right to the drive of Cross House Farm.
Keep ahead through the yard and continue with woodland on the right. When you reach a junction at a metal gate bear left onto a gravelly track. Ahead the huge wind turbine of Dew Lay provides feature on the flat landscape.
In 400yds where the track turns left keep ahead through a metal gate and then cross the field to its far right corner. After a stile bear right on a track leading round Kirkland Hall. After passing through the yard of Kirkland Hall Farm turn left onto a farm track leading to A586 Fleetwood Road. When you reach it turn left for Churchtown.
