Cardle, the 2010 X Factor winner, introduced Lancaster’s own singing star and gave him a ringing endorsement.

After Matt ended his set, he told the thousands packed into Market Square that Akister’s elimination from the TV talent show two weeks ago had been “an absolute travesty”.

The two singers shook hands as Paul walked onto stage to a thunderous reaction.

The Lancastrian then launched into a powerful set of songs including ‘Ghost’, ‘Let’s Get It On’ and ‘Stay With Me’ as fans clapped and sang along.
