Lancaster shopping centre introduces conversation benches to help tackle loneliness

A Lancaster shopping centre is encouraging visitors to take a seat, strike up conversation and feel more connected to their local community with the introduction of its conversation benches.

Marketgate believes that even the smallest conversations can make a big difference.

With loneliness affecting people at any stage of life, the shopping centre is taking steps to help create more opportunities for meaningful social interaction within the Lancaster community.

The conversation benches provide a welcoming space designed to encourage people to stop, sit and share a friendly chat.

Whether visiting the centre alone, taking a break from shopping or simply looking for a little conversation, the benches offer visitors an easy way to connect and engage with others in an inclusive environment.

In an increasingly busy world, opportunities for social connection can sometimes be limited.

Through this initiative, Marketgate hopes to help break down barriers to conversation, encourage everyday interactions and create a stronger sense of community among visitors.

A simple hello or a few minutes of conversation can have a positive impact on someone's day.

By providing a space where people can feel comfortable striking up a conversation, Marketgate aims to ensure everyone feels welcome, included and a little more connected.

Centre manager Sarah Harrison commented: “We believe that a little conversation can go a long way. Our conversation benches are a simple but meaningful way to encourage people to connect with one another and help make Marketgate a welcoming place for everyone in our community.”

For those who may need a little extra support, there are plenty of local organisations and helplines available to help and offer guidance.
