Review: Jess Glynne at Haydock Races

It was an evening of sunshine, rain and double rainbows for singer Jess Glynne, headlining at Haydock Race Course.

In front of what she admitted was her biggest ever headline audience of around 20,000 people, she took to the stage in front of an enthusiastic and well-oiled races crowd.

There may not have been many punters in posh frocks at her recent gig at Glasto, but Jess – very much the lady of the moment – was welcomed by a mixed crowd of multi-generational race-goers with a festival atmosphere and the sense of camaraderie that only mid-set torrential rain can bring.

She may have been dismayed at the turn in the weather but she did not let it dampen her infectious joy at performing live, dressed in a patterned suit she leapt about the stage sharing her impressive selection of hits.

She opened her set with one of the five number one singles she has to her name ‘Don’t be so hard on yourself’, before the hit she famously lent her vocals to - and which launched her career – Clean Bandit’s Rather Be.

To a sea of dancing umbrellas she took the crowd on musical journey through her back catalogue as well as sharing her day’s experiences at a charity awards ceremony – and apologising for the weather.

The crowd were delighted by her rendition of Any Winehouse’s ‘Tears dry in their own’ and the return to the 80’s with Donna Summer’s ‘I feel love’.

She proved the quality of her voice, singing above the noise of the rain – this girl can sing anything she likes and make it sound amazing.

A fab night and looks like these concert series are a gamble that keeps on winning for Haydock.

As a performer, this is one lady on her way to finding the pot of gold at the end of the pop rainbow.
