The closure of the Co-operative food store alongside Lancaster Bus Station in August provoked nostalgia for the days when Lancaster and District Co-operative Society had a major department store in Church Street/New Street.
Its chief executive was Duncan McKelvie, a straight-talking Scot who also was chairman of Lancaster Magistrates.
Alan Sandham, a member of the national members’ council of the Co-operative Group, said: “It is extremely sad the Co-operative store alongside Lancaster Bus Station closed, considering how much Co-op presence there was in the city a few decades ago.
“It leaves just one store in Lancaster at Barley Cop Lane, Hare Runs. We look forward to the opening of a replacement store as soon as possible.”
