Morecambe FC’s award-winning pies have shot to the top of the league with a man who spent three years travelling the country in search of the perfect pie.

The chicken, ham and leek pie, made by Shrimps head chef, Graham Aimson, was rated as the Best Chicken Pie and Best Football Pie by pie-lover Martin Tarbuck.

The 41-year-old Wiganer reviewed around 400 pies covering nearly 10,000 miles and he is hoping his resulting book, Life of Pies, will prove to be a tasty hit.

Martin said: “I have travelled up to Morecambe several times now and met with Graham and I am always taken aback with the amazing quality of pastry products he serves up to the humble football fan.

“I only wish that the pies at my own team, Wigan Athletic, were half as good!”

Martin – the editor of Wigan-based magazine The Mudhutter – was at the Globe Stadium just last week filming for the BBC with Graham discussing what makes the perfect pie.

He said: “We are a little bit obsessed with pies in Wigan but I guess I took it one stage further with a steely determination to seek out the best there is and document it all.”

But this isn’t the first time MFC pies have won national acclaim.

In April, Graham and the catering team at Morecambe celebrated winning two categories at the 2015 British Pie Awards.

It was the fourth occasion the club had taken home the title for the Football Pie category and the second time for the Dessert Pie.

Life of Pies by Martin Tarbuck is available at www.lifeofpies.co.uk or from Amazon, priced £9.99.
