Sarah said: “Even adults who have never opened a bible, or who have tried but find it confusing, will discover much here to entertain and inform.”

She has taken almost 60 stories from the bible – some familiar and others less well known – and retold them in with the aim of bringing the characters and settings to life.

Sarah is well practised in writing stories for children having published four picture books,20 educational titles and has won commendations for her poetry.

Her next picture book, Legs, will be published by Lion in August.

But the primary school teacher and mother-of-two says retelling the stories of the bible was a challenge like no other.

Sarah said: “As I read through the bible, it became clear that even though it is made up of 66 books of letters, poetry, history and stories that were written by all kinds of different people, who lived hundreds of years and miles apart, there was a single story thread that ran all the way through it.

“And that’s what I’ve tried to bring out in this children’s version. Each story can be read and enjoyed separately, but by reading them all, another story emerges. It’s a bit like being a detective, following the clues all the way through to discover what it’s really about!”

The Lion Children’s Bible is available from book stores and online outlets.
