Plans for two new micropubs in one Lancaster street

Plans have just been submitted for Great Scott, in Scotforth Road, Scotforth, and work is well underway to open The Wobbly Cobbler, also in Scotforth Road - both positioning themselves as “micropubs”.

According to the Micropub Association, a micropub is a small freehouse which listens to its customers, mainly serves cask ales, promotes conversation, shuns all forms of electronic entertainment and dabbles in traditional pub snacks.

Recent additions to the micropub scene in the district include Accidental Brewery in Lancaster, The Snug at Carnforth Railway Station, The Little Bare in Bare, The Crossing in Hest Bank and The Bookmakers in Heysham.

Plans have also just been submitted for a new micropub and microbrewery on the Royal Station Hotel site in Carnforth.

In Scotforth, Great Scott would share the ground floor of 89 Scotforth Road with sound and lighting equipment specialists Northern Lights, which currently occupies the whole of the building.

The plans, submitted by Nick Egdell of Dolphinholme, would see the ground floor of the building divided off from the staircase and secondary entrance, creating two separate units.

The hall and first floor offices would be retained by Northern Lights.

The ground floor will comprise a bar and seating area, with a beer cellar in the basement.

The application states: “This proposal is for a local venue that is community driven and focused on the nearby catchment area with restricted opening hours unlike the traditional pub type establishment.

“The nature and scale of this proposal is aimed at meeting that specific market.

“The proposed location, within a small urban commercial centre, is therefore well suited.

“The business is to be family run by a local family, who have several year’s experience in running an establishment of this sort.”

The proposed opening hours are 4pm until 9pm Monday to Friday, and 2pm until 9pm on weekends and bank holidays.

Further down the road, work is well underway to launch The Wobbly Cobbler micropub, after it was granted planning permission in October 2019.

Formerly a florist, the ground floor premises will also include outside seating at the front of the building.

It is due to open in February.
