The New Inn on Poulton Square, Morecambe was ordered to close at 6pm tonight and will remain shut for a month.

Announcing the move, public health boss Dr Karunanithi explained: “Following public health concerns, we have issued the pub with a Direction under the Coronavirus Regulations, which means it cannot currently open.

“Whilst the majority of our pubs and restaurants are acting responsibly, it was disappointing to see lack of social distancing being maintained to keep customers safe at this pub.

“It is important we take measures such as this to ensure there isn’t an increase in cases which could subsequently trigger a wide economic lockdown.

“I urge every business to play their part to protect our communities from a second wave by strictly following Covid safe guidance.”

Lancaster City Councillor Dave Brookes, cabinet member with responsibility for environmental services, said: “Our public protection teams have been working very closely with pubs and bars to ensure they have the information they need to help them open and operate safely.

“There is no doubt that this can be a challenge, but for the most part licensed premises have responded extremely well, with some excellent examples of innovation and good practice in place to help keep staff and customers safe. I'm grateful for this positive response, and would also like to thank the public who have taken the restrictions in their stride.

“It is therefore very disappointing that this particular premises has not taken the necessary steps to trade safely, despite the issuing of previous enforcement notices, along with advice and guidance being made readily available and support visits from members of the public protection team.

“Large or small, urban or rural, all venues need to put public safety first and maintain social distancing and follow the Covid measures to minimise the risk of outbreaks.

"No one should want to see a return to increased restrictions or a local lockdown as has happened elsewhere.”

We have attempted to contact the New Inn for a response.
