Eric art loved by his family and visitors

An art show at Morecambe library to celebrate Eric Morecambe's 90th birthday was opened by the comedian's daughter Gail.

Morecambe Artists Colony, organisers of ‘The Art Show Wot We Done’ asked 150 artists to submit work inspired by the TV comedianbut said anyone could send in “Eric” artwork.

Organiser Sian Johnson said: “We were very pleased that we have had eight sales of the art. The exhibitionwas opened by Gail Morecambe and she was absolutely thrilled. It was above her expectations and she was excited about the quality of the art.

“She bought two pieces of art and said she was going to come back with her family.

“It makes you realise what a popular library Morecambe is.” A giant poster which would have revealed images of Eric and his comedy partner Ernie Wise from behind a curtain went missing shortly before the grand opening of the exhibition and organisers believed the poster had been stolen.It has not been recovered.

The event coincides with an exhibition about the Morecambe-born entertainer at Lancaster’s City Museum from May 14.

The exhibition at Morecambe Library runs until July 16. Eric Morecambe, who died in 1984, would have turned 90 years old on May 14.
