Quality care for independent living in Lancaster and Morecambe
There are still reported waits of up to 10 hours for ambulances in some parts of the country, as the need to free up bed spaces on hospital wards continues after the pandemic.
That is why two Westmorland General Hospital doctors, Dr Joshua Macaulay and Dr Christopher Moss, wanted to ‘do things differently’. At their branch of Westmorland Homecare in Lancaster, they offer companionship, personal care, support with medication and home help to those who wish to live at home but need assistance.
Dr Macaulay said: “Patients inevitably decline whilst in hospital. They lose mobility, independence and sadly some never make it home. I will never forget a lady I cared for in hospital who was ready to go home but caught an infection whilst waiting for a care package and tragically died before she could get back.
“We knew something had to be done. The gold standard of care is to keep people out of hospital in the first place and when they are admitted, to get them back home as soon as they are ready.
“There is no doubt in my mind that good quality homecare provision not only helps the person themselves, as they receiving the care they need at the time they need it, in the comfort of their own home, but also eases the huge burden the NHS is currently facing. The strain the NHS is under was highlighted recently on an ITV programme and many people were shocked by how bad the delays can be.”

Westmorland Homecare’s clients are aged from 18 years and over, the oldest is currently 102, with needs which range from simple and regular to more complex care. Or some need more occasional respite care.
