Members of the university’s Korfball Club have pledged to spend the next five weeks running, walking and swimming more than 1,500 miles to raise money for CancerCare.

The distance represents the amount of miles the team would have racked up travelling to matches across the UK had the season not been cut short due to the coronavirus outbreak

Korfball was invented in the Netherlands and is a fast and furious mixed-sex sport similar to netball and basketball. It is played in more than 50 countries worldwide and is growing rapidly in the UK, particularly in universities.

Team member Luke Ravenscroft, who is in his first year studying Politics & International Relations, said that the club wanted to do something special to raise money for the local community so they drew up a list of a number of Lancaster-based charities, including CancerCare.

Luke said: “In the current situation there are a lot of people raising money for the big charities and the NHS and we didn’t want the smaller, local charities to miss out.

"We put it to a vote and CancerCare was by far the most popular among the members of the club because of the fantastic work it does with people in the community.”

The club is aiming to raise £1,500 which will be split between the club itself, which has seen its own funds hit by restrictions imposed as a result of Covid-19, and CancerCare. They have already raised a fabulous £400.

CancerCare Fundraising Officer Anna Webster said: ““We are delighted that Luke and the team are taking on this fundraising challenge for CancerCare. Our local charity relies on donations and these funds will help to provide immediate help to the families we support who are coping with cancer or bereavement during these especially difficult times.”
