But while parts of the county, including areas like Hynburn, are still seeing high rates of new coronavirus infections, the decision to place all of Lancashire in the highest tier has angered many.

That's because parts of the county - like Lancaster, Wyre and Blackpool - have had far fewer cases in recent days, meaning their infection rates are below the national average.

Local experts have criticised the move, saying "London does not understand Lancashire", and warning the impact on the local economy could be catasptrophic.

South Ribble Council leader Paul Foster called the government's insistence on ensuring the whole of Lancashire was in the same tier - despite not doing the same in Berkshire - an "absolute disaster".

And Fleetwood and Lancaster MP Cat Smith, whose constituency has some of the lowest infection rate in the county, said the tier system went "against all logic". More than 100 local council areas on the tier two list currently have a higher infection rate than Lancaster.
