Carnforth schoolboy raises £4,000 after braving the shave in memory of his grandad

A 12-year-old boy who has been growing his hair for the last year has raised more than £4,000 for a Lancaster charity close to his heart.

As we reported earlier this month, Matthew Roberts had his head shaved after growing his hair since January.

The Carnforth High School student took up the challenge after watching a TV programme about a child with cancer.

He decided he wanted to donate his hair to The Princess Trust, which provides free real hair wigs to children and young people who have lost their hair through cancer treatment and other conditions.

Matthew had to wear his hair in a ponytail to school after growing it around 15 inches long.

Matthew was also raising money for St John's Hospice in memory of his grandad Ken Debnam, who was cared for at the facility before he passed away in September 2017 from lung cancer.

And he smashed his £500 target by raising more than £4,000.

A raffle organised by mum Nicole using generous donations from local businesses also brought in £730.

Matthew is now considering growing his hair again - and for even longer - to help another child with cancer.
