Heather McClurg, principal at Morecambe Bay Academy, said: “Since the installation of the PCR unit at school on Monday, over 300 pupils have come forward to be tested, with two positive cases identified.

“As a precautionary measure, our Year 10 pupils are studying from home doing online learning until Monday, when we expect to welcome them back to school. All other year groups are asked to continue to come to school as normal.

“I would like to thank all pupils, staff and families for coming along to be tested this week, as that is the only way we can keep people safe and return to normal.

"Our community effort is vital in preventing a chain of infections and it is really important that we all continue to visit the site and get tested, even if you have no symptoms.”

Sam Ud-din local National Education Union secretary, said that he thought that the trust had acted "very appropriately" in warning parents and protecting pupils and staff as early as possible - and hoped that all schools in the district were being as proactive in protecting their communities.

He added: The issue of the local high numbers, often related to new variants of Covid-19, should mean that there ought to be ongoing allowance for the use of masks in schools in any environment where social distancing, even if not nationally mandatory any longer, was not possible."
