A symphony of learning connects pupils to classical music

A “New World” dawned at Bay Leadership Academy, as the Haffner Orchestra brought the timeless thrill of live performance to the next generation.

The Lancaster-based symphony orchestra performed the first and fourth movements from Dvořák’s New World Symphony to captivated pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9, combining powerful live renditions with engaging introductions, instrument demonstrations, and guided listening that brought the music vividly to life.

Taking a journey through the inspiration behind the music, pupils enjoyed the rare chance to hear directly from the musicians, gaining insight into the symphony’s sweeping themes, its echoes of hope and homesickness, and why the composer’s love letter to America continues to resonate as one of the most enduring and beloved works in the orchestral canon.

With the orchestra’s final note still resonating, pupils turned the tables and conducted their own Q&A with maestro Alex Robinson. Quizzing with a mix of genuine curiosity and refreshing honesty, their questions ranged from “How much practice does it take to get concert-ready?” to the wonderfully straightforward “What does a conductor actually do?”

Pupil feedback captured the powerful effect of the visit, with many describing the performance as “beautiful” and “glorious”, reflecting the unique thrill of experiencing classical music performed live. One pupil added, “It’s not something I would normally listen to but I’d definitely go and see a performance again,” while others spoke of the emotional impact the morning had on them.

Reflecting on the experience, Steven Houghton, Business Manager at Bay Leadership Academy, said: “We’ve had so many pupils bouncing down the corridors with huge grins on their faces - it will undoubtedly be an experience that stays with them for a lifetime.”

As the echoes of Dvořák’s New World Symphony fade, the harmony created between the orchestra and pupils promises to inspire a lifelong appreciation for the transformative power of live music.
