Lancaster University developing medical leaders to take health sector into the future

The 15-month MSc in Medical Leadership offers flexible, established digital delivery, allowing leaders to build the course around their workloads, as they undertake real work-based leadership projects and develop their knowledge and skills.

The course, endorsed by leading professional bodies the Chartered Management Institute and Institute of Leadership & Management, is suitable for doctors at any stage of their careers, including those who hold the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Leadership.

They will work on areas that develop their commitment to improving patient experience, demonstrate caring and compassionate leadership, and build the ability to achieve medical and organisational impact.

The course is designed to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in line with the NHS Clinic Leadership Competency Framework. Fees are fully-funded through the Government’s Apprenticeship Levy, with a 95 per cent subsidy for non-levy employers. The application process is now open for starts in September and December 2020.

Students on the Lancaster University programme will work with their personal mentor from the quadruple-accredited and world-ranked business school to map out the work that needs to be completed in order to complete the apprenticeship, with modules focusing on finance, entrepreneurship and research, as well as two work-based projects.

“Future leaders on the Medical Practice Masters benefit from working with an established and globally-respected Business School to develop skills vital for the nation’s health service,” said Dr Debbie Simpson, Director of Executive Education in LUMS.

“As well as growing and developing in areas key for leadership roles, Apprentices are able to work with and learn from other doctors from different specialisms and with varying levels of experience; allowing them to appreciate tasks and scenarios from a wide range of medical perspectives.”

Prior learning is taken into account, allowing those who have completed the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Leadership to carry credits forward into the Masters course. The course can be planned to last between 15 months and 60 months for those without the certificate.

The programme leads to the renowned Lancaster University Masters in Medical Leadership, tailored to meet the requirements of Senior Leader Apprenticeship Standards and professional competency requirements the CMI and ILM.

The course is already established to run completely online, with options for face-to-face meetings with individual learning coaches and apprenticeship mentors; and online collaboration with other course participants.
