Halton chippy wins Lancaster Guardian's Chippy of the Year

A Halton chip shop has taken home the title for Lancaster Guardian's Chippy of the Year 2018.

Black’s Finest Fish & Chips on High Road beat off other eateries to come first place in the competition.

“We are absolutely thrilled that we have retained our title as Lancaster Guardian’s Chippy of the Year,” said owner Matthew Black.

“Unlike many of the other awards that we have received, this one is given based on votes from our customers, and it means a lot to us that so many people voted for us.

“We are a family run chippy and support from the village is really important to us so I would like to thank everyone who took the time to fill in a voting slip.”
The business opened in 2013, a partnership between Matthew Black and his mother Kay Murray.

Previously Matthew was a musician and music teacher, holding a degree in jazz.

The shop has achieved a number of accolades since it opened.

In 2017 Brett Coulton, their junior fryer was named among the top 10 in the Young Fish Fryers of the Year awards.

The chippy also reached the finals of the National Fish & Chip awards last year.

In 2013 and 2016 they achieved the coveted Quality Award and in 2016 they won the Lancaster Guardian Chippy of the Year for the first time.

“When we won this competition in 2016 we noticed a lot of new customers coming and giving us a try from all over the area,

Lancaster, Morecambe and beyond,” said Matthew.

“Receiving this award has spurred us on for the futures, and we are going back to the National Fish and Chip awards this year with a renewed confidence and enthusiasm.”

In second place for the Lancaster Guardian’s Chippy of the Year 2018 was Bowerham Chip Shop on Coulston Road and third place, Packet Bridge Fish and Chips on Main Road, Bolton-le-Sands.

Black’s Finest Fish & Chip shop have also been recognised with the prestigious National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) Fish & Chip Quality Award this year.
