FREE: Family History Fridays, Preston, Friday, April 13

Head to the Lancashire Archives in Bow Lane Preston once a month for a day of family history activities. You can get free advice and help with your family history problems from members of the Lancashire Family History and Heraldry Society. There will also be a free talk - this month’s subject is civil registration by Lancashire Certificate Services. There’s also a getting to know you session to learn how to use the service. Adamas Voces, from Pembrokshire, Wales, will be presenting a sequence of music from Lent to Easter, directed by Vaughn Richardson at St Walburges Church in Preston. They will be performing music such as Miserere by Allegri, Sleep by Whitacre, Christus Factus Est by Bruckner, Kyrie by Byrd, Salvator Mundi by Tallis and more. The music starts at 7pm and is expected to finish around 9pm. Tickets are £8 and include a programme and refreshments served afterwards. Profits to Women’s Institute in Lancashire.

Bubble Rush is family-friendly 5k course with a difference… As you run, dance, walk or skip round the course you’ll head through four coloured Bubble Stations. On each Bubble Station there will be high powered foam cannons blowing out heaps of frothy milkshake bubbles to ensure you get completely covered in coloured frothy foam. Join for a walk along one of the Forest of Bowland’s most stunning valleys. Take this opportunity to learn more about the international importance of the area for birds of prey and the rare upland habitat they call home during the spring and summer. Booking is essential. FREE: Tennis Open Day, Lancaster, Saturday, April 14

Lancaster Tennis Club in Lune Road is launching its new tennis season with an Open Day. The day runs from 2pm until 4pm and is open for anyone interested in trying out tennis and maybe becoming the next Andy Murray. This is for both adults and juniors, from ages five and upwards. Dad’s Army Special is the ultimate in 1940s entertainment, featuring many of the stars from the WW2 era, including George Formby, Gracie Fields, G.I. Frank Sinatra, Max Miller and the UK number one Vera Lynn tribute, Lorrie Brown. The show is supported by the Warrington-On-Sea Home Guard Dad’s Army. The troop will be performing brand new sketches and introducing the musical acts. It’s being presented at the Marine Hall, Fleetwood at 7.30pm. Tickets £15. Call 01253 887693 to book.

FREE: The April Fire Jam, Preston, Sunday, April 15

After the success of last year’s fire jam, another one is taking place on Avenham and Miller Parks in Preston. People of every age are welcome, with any prop they wish to bring along to play with. Any prop allowed, including LED/daytime props/fire/wire wool. Also take along any drums or musical instruments. Hosted by Cirque du Preston. Runs from 6pm until 9.30pm. Those under the age of 18 should be accompanied by an adult - if you aren’t and your actions endanger others, you will be asked to leave for everybody’s safety, and your own.

This popular beer festival returns and following the successful introduction of craft gins to the BBFC, the beer festival has now been extended to include a gin bar. As always our beer bar will offer the finest selection of real ales from breweries across the UK, including local micro breweries. The gin bar will offer 47 gins from the finest craft distilleries across the UK. Plus live entertainment. Open 7pm until 12am (Fri); 1pm until 12am (Sat); 1.30pm until 10.30pm (Sun).

PAID: Guided Walk: Spring Flowers, Preston, Sunday, April 15

Join a guided walk around Brockholes Nature Reserve to learn more about their spring flowers. No knowledge or experience required. The event is suitable for complete beginners. Go dressed for the weather wearing sturdy footwear. Meet outside the Welcome Centre. Tickets, costing £4.50, include free car parking for the full day. This event is aimed at adults, but interested children aged 11 and over are welcome to attend. They must be accompanied and supervised by an adult with a ticket.

Anything is possible if you free yourself up. Using the Lubaina Himid: Hard Times exhibition as inspiration, let poet Joseph Barrow show you how to liberate yourself with the power of words and find the poetry that is already inside you. Joseph is a published poet and has been creating poetry for 25 years. He is also a member of Preston Black History Group. Everyone welcome. Another first in the area from the Ribble Valley Music Festival bringing a celebration of contemporary American roots music styles that influence Americana, including country, roots-rock, folk and bluegrass, with the music of Alison Kraus, Simon and Garfunkel, Everly Brothers, Dolly Parton, Dixie Chicks, Emmylou Harris and Johnny Cash. It’s being held at Chatburn Methodist Church on Saturday from 3pm until 10pm. It’s the 1930s, movies are being made faster than you can say MGM, and being made to make you feel good. Judy Garland, Betty Hutton, Lucille Ball and Bette Davis each made their own strides to make women a more prominent and powerful force in Hollywood. Rebecca Perry returns to Spot On at Garstang Library for a night of marvellous melodies and scandalous headlines from the Golden Age of Hollywood. The Tuesday show begins at 7.30pm and is suitable for ages 12 and over. Tickets are £8 adults; £6 children, available by emailing [email protected] or visit the library.

FREE: It's a Man Life, Leyland, Monday, April 16

This short course is designed to introduce and discuss a number of male health related topics. Personal reflection will enable learners to identify how to improve their health and wellbeing resulting in an improved quality of life. Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre at UCLan, Preston, is hosting a Charity Fitness Fest on Saturday, raising money for Teenage Cancer Trust. They will be delivering fitness classes all day with something for everybody - bootcamp, spinning, pilates, zumba and more. It’s a public event with a £10 donation to the charity for the whole day.
