Wigan's first case of swine flu was today confirmed by medics.
Just hours after health secretary Andy Burnham warned that 100,000 British people could be infected each day by the end of August, the borough's NHS trust said that a patient was now being treated who definitely had the virus.

It is rumoured to be someone in Standish and at least two people with whom he or she has come into contact are themselves now undergoing tests.

The trust itself is not disclosing any peronal details - even age, gender or whether or not he or she has recently been on holiday to such swine flu hotspots as Mexico - only saying that the patient is not seriously ill and recoving at home.

However it has stepped up its warnings to the Wigan public on minimising the risk of infection and what to do if they develop symptoms.
