A group of dysfunctional flat mates trying to make their way in the world is the focus of Lancaster University Theatre Group’s latest production.
According to producer Georgina Sykes, Shopping and F***ing, which plays at The Dukes DT3 on June 13 and 14, explores the darkest recesses of consumerism in a world where everything is for sale.
The cast are all students at Lancaster University, studying a range of subjects including Theatre Studies and English Literature.
Tom Morris and Katie Gledhill, who starred in Sweeney Todd as Sweeney and Joanna, return playing recovering drug addict Mark and mother-figure Lulu. When Robbie loses his job at a ‘leading burger chain’, out-of-work actress Lulu is forced to apply for a sales job with the shady figure of Brian. While Mark’s search for love leads him to enigmatic rent boy Gary.
Georgina said: “Shopping and F***ing focuses on a numb and desperate generation, in a corrosively disposable world. LUTG’s production is blackly comic and fiercely explicit, performed by a talented young cast.
“Producing Mark Ravenhill’s play is a controversial decision due to explicit content and hard-hitting themes.”
The play is strictly 16 plus due to explicit scenes of drug use and sexual violence.
The show times are 7.30pm on June 13, and 6pm and 8.30pm on June 14. Running time is around one hour twenty. Tickets, priced £7 for adults, £6 for concessions, and £5 for LUTG members, are available from The Dukes Box Office.
