A BEWITCHING birthday bash will be in the offing at Williamson Park in summer 2012 as the Dukes stages a production of Sabbat to mark the 400th anniversary of the Lancashire Witch Trials.

The play had a record-breaking run at the Lancaster theatre in 2009 but its park setting this time around will be just a stone’s throw away from where some of the witches were hanged.

Sabbat attempts to unravel the mysteries behind one of England’s most famous trials. Did Alice Nutter and the others really take part in a witches’ Sabbat? Or were these Pendle folk innocent victims at a time of persecution, paranoia and superstition?

Performances will take place in the round inside a large marquee where the audience will be close to the action and can share in an imaginative new approach to this historic story.
