STEPPING into the shoes of Jane Horrocks, Shirley Bassey and Judy Garland is a pretty daunting challenge.
But for self-confessed “musical geek” Rebecca Hutchinson, it’s a career dream come true.
The actress is playing the lead role in The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, which runs at The Dukes in Lancaster until April 16.
This Northern comedy drama is being performed professionally for the first time anywhere in the country since its successful run in the West End last year, when Diana Vickers played Little Voice.
But the role seems made for Darwen-born Rebecca, 24, who has loved the music of the great divas since she was a teenager.
The play focuses on the life of Little Voice, a painfully shy young woman who disappears into a world of music to escape the chaotic life of her fun-loving drunken mother.
Surrounded by vinyl and memories of her father, Little Voice imitates the great divas, Bassey and Monroe, Garland and Holliday, and her musical gift is soon spotted.
Rebecca said: “I was a bit like Little Voice because I love Judy Garland, and used to get musicals on CD and act them all out in my bedroom.”
However, on leaving school, Rebecca decided against pursuing a showbiz career.
