LANCASTER and District Male Voice Choir ends its 2010/11 concert season by returning to St John’s Church, one of its favourite venues, on Saturday, July 2.
The choir will be conducted at the concert by its musical director, Derek Walters, who taught music and conducted in south Lancashire before going into publishing in London.
He returned to Morecambe for an active retirement in music. Derek is an accomplished arranger and has widened the choir’s repertoire with new male voice settings.
Two are included in this concert: Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus and the folk song The Keel Row. The latter has been inspired by Northumbrian pipes and gives each voice a turn with the main melody.
By special request there will be some classic male voice pieces including some Welsh items sung by the Vron Choir on its recent Lancaster visit.
The present choir accompanist is Shaun Pirrtijarvi, who was a guest soloist with the choir some years ago at Cartmel Priory, graduated in music at York University and is currently organ scholar at Lancaster Priory.
